AMBOY Amboy HS started off our year with a Freshman/New Student Mixer, held a couple days before school started. We invited all freshmen and new to district high school to come to the school at 6pm, had pizza, cookies, and drinks and served them through the hot lunch line so they would all know where to go for lunch. While they were eating, we went over lunch procedures, payments, etc. and a few other rules they should know ahead of time. We made special magnets for each of their lockers and had them on them so they knew where their lockers were. We had told them they could bring in any supplies they had and leave them in their lockers. After we ate, we split into groups and led tours around the building, and at each classroom, told the teachers name and what subjects were taught in that room and then 3 quick facts about that teacher or hints to get along in that classroom. The tour leaders all had the same script to follow to keep the tour moving and so that they wouldn't get off subject about any teacher. After tours, we then played dodgeball games and the students were also able to go to the library to pick up their chromebooks. This year the event theme was "Dodge your First Day Jitters and Celebrate High School." Last year was the first time we held the event and the theme was "Knock Out Those First Day Jitters and Celebrate High School" and we had a company come in to run a Knockerball tournament. Our theme for Homecoming was "Dancing through the Decades" and we used the 50's, 60s, 70s, and 80s. We had a hallway decorating contest and our dress up days included Match 'Em Monday (twin day), Throwback Tuesday (dress in your class assigned decade), Walk of Fame Wednesday (dress like a famous figure from any of those 4 decades), Tshirt Thursday (Class assigned color), and Friday is always our Clipper Pride Day (Red White and Black). We started the week off with a PowderPuff football game on Sunday afternoon. Tuesday was Decade Day at the home VB game, Thursday was our coronation and Skit Night, Friday was our parade in the afternoon and our game, then the dance on Saturday.
Our next event will be our winter Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon, where we bring in food from Candlelight Inn and serve all of our staff members. We have table linens, door prizes, desserts, etc.
We will also be holding a MORP dance (black light, very informal) dance in January, and will also have a spring Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon called "Spuds and Suds," where we order baked potato of choice from Arthur's Garden Deli and have root beer floats for dessert.
BYRON Byron started their 2017-2018 student council activities at the end of the last school year when they picked their homecoming theme "Tigers take the big screen," or "Hollywood." Over the summer they worked in committees to plan all things homecoming. They stayed in these committees up until the dance; these groups included: dance decorations, pep rally, fashion show, car decorating, alumni, and powderpuff. After homecoming, the council was divided into four families. Throughout the year, each family is responsible for a school service event, a fundraiser, a teacher appreciation gift, and a community service activity. Of these, the fundraiser and the holiday/season of the teacher appreciation was given to each family. When creating these families, there was an equal number of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in each group. Three executive board members were placed into each family. Within the family, there are two elected leaders and a chair person for each of their 4 activities. As the year goes on, the goal is to push the non-executive members to take on larger roles within the councils. This is the first year Byron has done a family system, so they are able to evaluate what worked well and what didn't. However, they have had great results so far. In total, the families have completed the Halloween and winter teacher appreciation gifts, holiday/ finals week dress up days and candy cane grams. After break the families are planning a lot more exciting activities!
